About the book and the author:

"We are East Londoners (Leyton) and what better place is there than London to appreciate the humble yet magnificent pigeon? We have our very own pigeon haven in a little park opposite our little flat above the Royal Cafe, Coronation Gardens. We often take seeds across to feed the cheeky little critters.

It was my boys' love of pigeons, as well as our great access to them, that enabled us to interact with them. Through our park visits we have got to know them and their different characters. There are bolder ones and shyer ones, friendly ones and stroppy ones.

Despite often being a little unloved, pigeons are incredibly adaptable, intelligent and sweet creatures that have helped humans for a very long time. They have amazing capabilities, and in making a set of 30 bird top trumps in which we researched the speed, skills and bravery of different birds, we found these amazing facts about pigeons:

- they can fly up to 77mph
- they are navigation experts and war veterans having been used to deliver messages between troops.
- they can recognise people's faces including in photographs, so if you regularly interact with the same pigeons, they can become your friends as we have been delighted to find out!

All of this inspired me to write this story about Perky the Pigeon and I hope you and your little ones like it!"
